When you're stuck in a cold cab waiting for heat that doesn’t seem to show up, it’s a good time to think about how others test their heaters. Let’s swap some quick methods, tips, and habits to ensure the heater’s running properly before winter really kicks in.

One winter, I spent what felt like an eternity shivering in my cab before I finally realized the heater was barely doing its job. Now, I make it a point to check the fan and vent temps before the chill sets in, ensure the coolant is topped off, and give that blend door a little wiggle.

Learned my lesson the hard way when my heater decided to stay cold during a January field test. Now, I kickstart the engine, check the hot hoses at the firewall, feel the airflow at each vent, and let it run for a few minutes.

After experiencing what I can only describe as frostbite in my own cab (okay, maybe that’s a bit of an exaggeration, I’ve started doing a quick pre-season test, cranking the fan up high, checking the vents, and using a little temp gun if I have one handy. If everything warms up evenly, I know I’m in the clear if not, it’s time to get some maintenance done before the real cold rolls in.
