International 684 brass fillings

Hi hoping some seasoned international mechanics can point me in the right direction here,our old trusted workhorse 684 was due a bit of TLC after hay season was wrapped up.i drained the hytran and took off the hyd filter to find fine brass fillings in the filter housing and larger chunks caught up in the actual filter.tractor did hay no problems as such with transmission,PTO etc.i heard the brakes can be suspect on the 84 series.see attached pics of filter housing and filter,is appreciate any advice or where to start with this problem

Those brass shavings aren't great and they usually point to internal wear in the transmission or torque converter. Since the tractor ran fine otherwise, I'd start by inspecting the brake pack and planetary gears, especially on the 84 series where the brakes are known to be a weak point. Definitely replace the filter and do a full fluid flush, then monitor for more metal

Paul, brass in the filter on a 684 is often tied to brake discs since they use bronze facing, though planetary thrust washers can also shed if they're worn. Did you notice any change in braking feel or noise before finding the debris, as that would help narrow whether you're looking at brake pack wear or something deeper in the transmission?
