What’s your secret ingredient for ensuring your soil stays healthy year after year? Do you stick with compost and cover crops, or have you tried out biochar or gypsum?

From my quick research, it looks like some of the keys to keeping your soil healthy and thriving, is to think about mixing up your cover crops, maybe plant some clover, radish, or rye every now and then. And don’t forget about compost! Applying it regularly can work wonders for your soil. If you have clay soils, adding gypsum can really help with that pesky compaction. It’s also a great idea to test your soil every year to be able to know exactly what it needs.

And whenever you can, try to stick to no-till practices. They’re fantastic for preserving the structure of your soil over time!

I think it’s really important to keep an eye on how microbial activity and organic matter levels change over time, too. And you know, mulching can make a big difference as well. It’s a simple step that can really boost the health of the soil!

oh yeah, biochar is your best bet for a multi century amendment. It doesn't break down like compost, it provides permanent housing for microbes, locks in moisture, and retains nutrients. You only apply it once or twice.

That’s a great tip! Biochar really does seem like a long-term fix for keeping soil healthy.
